Helen C. Read
I live in the midwest,
though I am originally from Texas. It was in my very young years that I first
became captivated by drawing, painting - - all things art! It
was a natural choice to study art in college, where I earned a BA in fine
art from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL.
After a hiatus of raising children, continuing to pursue art in starts and stops, I went back to do a master's degree in teaching from National Louis University and began teaching art at the secondary level. I primarily teach drawing, jewelry, ceramics, and design, though on occasion have taught painting as well. One would think, being so emersed in a creative career, that making art would be a daily experience. But, not so. Because life is so busy, it requires determination and intention.
For me, visual art is a language. It is a way to communicate, and as such requires that I continue to explore, to experiment, to express, and to reveal. The real enjoyment comes when I f eel I am able to express beauty and enjoyment to the world that easily looses sight of simple pleasures. Visual communication uses dramatic, bold colors sometimes, and at other times understated, lyrical colors. Pattern and line often infer meaning, as well as shadow and light. All these techniques are used to create a meaningful whole. I'm still learning and exploring and finding new ways. Always, I try to capture what I know of our world and explain it in a new, perhaps surpising way.
At
the core of my artistic expression is also a foundational belief that being
made in the image of our Creator,
the language of art is one that honors God when intended for that purpose.
Its my intent to do so!

Helen lives in Wheaton, IL with her children,
who are in varying stages of flying from the nest.
Besides parenting, teaching high school, and creating art, she is an active
member of her church and several small groups. She also is a writer.
