Amber Afternoon

Just beyond my home, there is a marsh that shifts with the seasons but never loses its quiet presence. In late autumn, it glows in the afternoon sun.

Amber Afternoon was born from one of those hushed moments when the light begins to lower and the wooded marsh illuminates.

The meandering watery path begins in the distance as a pale reflection of the sky, then deepens into a clear blue, and finally settles into a rich blue-violet in the foreground — drawing the eye forward, step by step. That changing ribbon of water became the heart of the painting for me. It feels like an invitation — a gentle path leading from stillness into depth.

The more shadowy left side of the marsh is dressed in cooler tones of blue and blue-green, with pockets of straw-colored light breaking through the grasses. The right side of the marsh is bathed in warmth — glowing yellows, oranges, and sienna that seem almost lit from within. The quiet interplay of shadow and radiance evokes a  sense of balance and peace.

I wanted this painting to carry the serenity I experienced when standing there. Marshes are often overlooked landscapes — humble — yet they hold extraordinary beauty and a little bit of mystery. In this 11 x 14 inch space, I hoped to capture that gentle grandeur.

For a home interior, Amber Afternoon offers a peaceful place for the eyes to rest. The movement of water leads you inward; the warm grasses wrap the space in warmth; while the cool shadows offer a sense of calm. It is a painting meant to bring the quiet intrigue of nature the room.

Beyond its serenity, it is also a whisper of glory — a reminder that even the unnoticed corners of the Creation are richly designed. The vivid warmth against the lovely blues hints at the generosity of God who joyously creates with both subtlety and brilliance. To sit with this piece is to be invited into peace and wonder.
